About This Destination
Introduction
The Diyaluma Falls Upper Pool is one of the most breathtaking natural attractions in Sri Lanka. Located at the top of Diyaluma Falls, these natural infinity pools offer a rare combination of adventure, relaxation, and stunning panoramic views. Unlike the famous base waterfall, the upper section remains a hidden gem for those willing to hike a little further.
• Location & Overview
Diyaluma Falls is situated in the Badulla District, about 6 km from Koslanda and around 30 km from Ella. It is the second-highest waterfall in Sri Lanka, standing approximately 220 meters tall.
At the top of this massive waterfall lies a series of natural rock pools, often referred to as the “Upper Diyaluma Pools” or “Infinity Pools,” because they appear to merge seamlessly with the horizon.
• What Makes the Upper Pool Special?
🌊 Natural Infinity Pools
The upper area features multiple tiered pools formed naturally over centuries. These pools are carved into smooth rock and sit right at the edge of the waterfall, creating a dramatic infinity effect overlooking the valley below.
🌄 Breathtaking Views
From the edge of the upper pool, visitors can enjoy 360° panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, forests, and plains. On clear days, the scenery stretches for miles, making it one of the most scenic viewpoints in Sri Lanka.
🏊 Safe Swimming Experience
Unlike the powerful base of the waterfall, many of the upper pools are calm and shallow, making them suitable for swimming. However, some pools closer to the edge require extra caution due to strong currents during rainy seasons.
• How to Reach the Upper Pools
Reaching the Diyaluma Upper Pool involves a short but rewarding journey:
🚗 Drive or take a tuk-tuk from Ella or Wellawaya to the starting point
🥾 Hike for about 20–45 minutes through grasslands and rocky paths
🌿 Follow the trail leading uphill to the top ridge
The hike is considered moderate and usually takes under an hour.
